IIIF for Archives: Sustainably Delivering Complex Born-Digital Materials

2026 January 27 International Image Interoperability Framework (IIIF) 2026 Online Meeting

The ArcLight Integration Project, funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), is exploring how archives can sustainably integrating digital objects into archival discovery systems using archival principles such as aggregate description. To address this, we developed Delivering Archives and Digital Objects: a Conceptual Model (DadoCM)—a system-agnostic model that establishes a common framework grounded in archival principles to describe and deliver digital objects in archival systems. DadoCM outlines how archives can use IIIF’s interoperability to integrate digital content across multiple systems while preserving the relationships and hierarchies that give archival materials meaning. It also identifies practical barriers that prevent archives from fully leveraging IIIF. While IIIF is widely adopted in libraries and museums, its full potential for archives to deliver born-digital materials remains underrealized.
