Rep. Pete King Attends NYPD, Homeland Security Nuclear Detection Drill In Brooklyn

"New York and Long Island are the main terror target in the country. The most dreaded threat is a nuclear dirty bomb attack which requires only a very small amount of nuclear material encased in ordinary explosives to cause major casualties and contamination. The NY-LI region, led by the NYPD, developed the Secure the Cities program to detect nuclear material anywhere in our region including highways, bridges, buildings etc. I fought hard to obtain the tens of millions of dollars from the Department of Homeland Security to start and maintain this project which is now a model for the nation. Today, the NYPD and Homeland Security conducted a nuclear detection drill at the Cyclones ballpark in Coney Island utilizing many of their assets ranging from the most basic (dogs) to the the most sophisticated radiation detectors. The drill was a success but it drove home the point that there is no room for error. Fighting Islamist terrorism is a tough business and we can never let down our guard."
